Modern Slavery: Seeing the Unseen, Standing for Freedom
When we hear the word slavery, many of us think of something from long ago—something tragic, but safely in the past. Yet today, across the world and even here in the UK, millions of people are trapped in what we now call modern slavery. It’s a hidden crime, often taking place behind ordinary doors, in everyday jobs, and within communities just like ours.
As a parish family rooted in compassion, it’s important that we understand this issue and recognise the ways we can be part of bringing hope and freedom.
What is modern slavery?
Modern slavery describes situations where a person is exploited and cannot refuse or leave because of threats, deception, or abuse of power. It includes forced labour, human trafficking, domestic servitude, forced marriage, and sexual exploitation. Unlike historical slavery, it doesn’t always involve chains or captivity. Instead, it often hides behind fear, debt, manipulation, or false promises.
Why are people trapped in slavery today?
People become vulnerable to exploitation for many reasons. Poverty, lack of education, conflict, homelessness, and unstable immigration status can all make someone more likely to trust the wrong person or accept a dangerous offer. Some are lured by promises of good jobs. Others are controlled through threats to their families. Many simply have nowhere else to turn. What all victims share is that someone has taken advantage of their vulnerability for profit.
Types of modern slavery
Modern slavery takes many forms, including:
• Forced labour — People made to work long hours for little or no pay, often in agriculture, construction, factories, nail bars, car washes, or food processing.
• Domestic servitude — Individuals, often women, forced to work in private homes with no freedom to leave.
• Sexual exploitation — People coerced or trafficked into prostitution or other forms of sexual abuse.
• Criminal exploitation — Victims forced to commit crimes such as shoplifting, drug cultivation, or county lines drug running.
• Forced marriage — Is when someone is pressured or threatened into marrying without their free and full consent. Most child marriages can be considered slavery
• Child Slavery including forced labour, forced marriage and forced child soldiers
Where is modern slavery found?
Sadly, modern slavery exists in every region of the world. It affects people in wealthy countries and poorer ones alike. The International Labour Organization estimates that tens of millions of people are currently living in slavery-like conditions globally.
And it is not just “somewhere else”. In the UK, thousands of potential victims are identified every year. Cases have been found in cities, towns, and rural areas. Even in Yorkshire, police and charities regularly uncover situations of forced labour, trafficking, and exploitation. It is closer than we think, often hidden in plain sight.
A call to compassion and awareness
As a parish community, we are called to be people of light—those who notice, who care, and who act. By learning the signs of exploitation, supporting charities that work with survivors, and praying for those trapped in darkness, we help build a world where every person is treated with dignity.
Modern slavery thrives in silence. But together, through awareness, compassion, and courage, we can help bring freedom into places where it has been stolen.

Take Action
Many everyday products we use in the UK, from clothes to coffee, are linked to forced labour. Around the world, millions of people are exploited to make them, while companies here profit.
Right now, businesses choose whether to act. That’s not good enough. Protecting people and the planet must be the law.
We must call for a new UK law to hold companies accountable when they fail to prevent human rights abuses or environmental harm in their supply chains.
Exploitation shouldn’t be in the things we buy, and the law must ensure it’s not.
